The Longest Day

Longest painting day of the year

Well, it was bound to happen and Summer officially arrived last Friday and with the longest day of the year on Saturday I decided to celebrate with non stop painting. I started in Mountain Park and ended up in my backyard about 24 hours later. This first is 12 x 12″ view with a right to left composition (don’t like the other way around) of one of the two small lakes in Mountain Park. My emphasis was the clouds —if I have to tell you then it’s not too successful. #2 Mountain Park 2PM. A 9 x 12″ view just to right of number one that I’ve painted several times but this one came out interestingly colorful and abstract. This… Read MoreLongest painting day of the year »

More Dam Paintings

I know it’s corny but I’ve done quite few paintings of dams over the years and I still have fun with it. Saturday I had to drive out to Buford to the Tannery to pick up a painting that was in the Gwinnett Parks Plein Air show . Buford is a cool little rail side town, so typical of many here in GA. They were build right along the tracks and at one time were farming communities and small manufacturing hubs that prospered with the coming of the railroads. The Tannery is a community arts center just south of the old town and has about twenty studios with local painters and sculptors along with a gallery. On the way home I… Read MoreMore Dam Paintings »

Finally cold

This last weekend it finally got cold here and as a result I spent most of the weekend inside. My one foray was to Mountain Park on Saturday for this 12 x12″. I’ve been inspired by the wonderful clouds that have been in the area for the last few weeks and decided to push the landscape down and give the clouds center stage, My thought was to go to the lake get a long vista across the water. Unfortunately is was brutally cold with a good stiff wind off the water. I can take the temperature but when the wind blew it was misery! I loaded up my rock bag with the largest stone I could find but this still… Read MoreFinally cold »

Trouble with white

This weekend I was determined to get out and paint on another unseasonably nice weekend. So Saturday I drove over to Mountain Park —my safe, go-to location for painting. Two small lakes are my main attraction there and I’ve painted them many, many times.  But in the winter it is a challenge with my nemesis – sticky trees. Sticky paint too! In haste I bought a tube of off brand last week and while working on this view was very frustrated by the stickiness of this paint which must have been student quality. After a while it just would not come off the brush. Students should never paint with sub par paint by the way—it’s hard enough painting as it… Read MoreTrouble with white »
