Plein air on Ilse of Palms

While participating in the Charleston paint out we stayed in Isle of Palms just north of town. We rented a condo up the beach and pretty much had the whole place to ourselves. Thank goodness we chose the right weekend with hurricane Sandy causing some bad weather this last weekend. This is the second time I’ve stayed here and the off season is the ticket. I love palm trees, or palmettos as they are called and both paintings feature them. If possible I try to make the light as obvious as I can in my recent work and had no problem with bright cloudless days the entire time.

Between the show and spending some quality time with my wife I didn’t have much time to paint but I did set up over two days on the balcony for the top one—Palm & Pool and spent one late afternoon working on the palm caught in setting sunlight below. Both required just a little touch up when I got home. This is another spot where I could have painted everyday for years.
